University’s running tilt an ‘eye opener’ (Sun Star, September 2006)

Participants in the upcoming 1st University Run-Run for Sight competition on Aug. 20 will be racing not only for personal glory but also for the greater good of those hindered with sight problems.

This was what Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal III, the race’s chief organizer, emphasized in yesterday’s formal launching of the event at the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) Hospital.

Larrazabal, who specializes in comprehensive ophthalmology and refractive surgery, said he decided to hold the event, which is patterned after the international Run for Sight/Run for a Cause competition, when he participated in last year’s San Francisco California edition of the race and saw the benefits the competition offered to those in need.

The proceeds of the 1st University Run-Run for Sight, which will feature the 10k and 5k categories, according to Larrazabal, will benefit Cebu City’s cataract foundation as well as other service facilities.

“Running represents freedom in mostly everything you do. Last year I have looked for marathon races in different places but found few. And when I joined my first-ever international marathon competition, which is the Run for Sight/Run for a Cause last year in San Francisco, California, where we passed through the Golden Gate bridge, I decided to organize our own race here.”

“The main point that I can impart, however, is this: You can run for everything, you can run maybe for love, for your wife or for anything. But if you run with us, you will be running to help a lot of people,” said Larrazabal, who was accompanied by his father, Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal II and his wife actress Donna Cruz during the forum.

The 10k category of the event, which is being co-presented by the CDU and Sight First Clinics, is being divided into the Men and Women’s Open divisions, Executive, Doctors and CDU employees.

The 5k category, on the other hand, is open to the parents, students and employees of CDU.

The Men’s Open division champion will receive P5,000 while the first and second runners up will take home P4,000 and P3,000, respectively.

The Women’s division champion, on the other hand, will pocket P4,000 while the second and third placers will earn P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

Cebu City Councilor Raul Alcoseba, who was also in the meeting, announced that M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala will also donate P10,000 to the event while the City government, through Alcoseba, will shell out P5,000.

Alcoseba also said the ML Kwarta Padala basketball team will also be joining in the run.

Official kick off time is slated at 6 a.m. in front of CDU and will wade through the major thoroughfares around the city.

The younger Larrazabal also announced that they are expecting a minimum of 1,500 runners to join the event, which is also supported by the Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts.
